How I try to be better
I am the first to admit that I am a work in progress and I am always trying to find better ways to do things from being a founder, a husband, a father, a work colleague, a business partner. My goal is to be a little better version of myself every year.
1. Be First
I first heard this on the Tim Ferris podcast from his guest Gabby Reece. A simple philosophy yet very hard to put into practice it simple means be first to say hello, to offer help, to apologize etc. Everyone seems to be waiting for an invite or the other person to be first and this can mean missing out, so why not Be First.
2. It is NOT about You
Just because you perceive offence from an interaction with someone does not always make it so. It is impossible for us to know the burdens that everyone else is living with on any given day and the reason the call or email was not returned or your order was misplaced could have been for a 1,000 other reason then they did it on purpose to upset you. Everything from they had a sleepless night from a sick child to gross incompetence can explain away 99% of the issues we take personally. As the stoic philosophy Marcus Aurelius says "Don’t feel harmed and you haven’t been.”
3. No-one is self made
A heard Arnold Schwarzenegger say this at a conference in Hong Kong last year and it is true of anyone who aspires to success. Yes you must work hard and undoubtedly have a little luck but at the end of the day it is the network you develop and the strengths of the ties you make that will get you closer to achieving your goals. This cuts both ways, if you have people holding you back then let them go and if you have people supporting you make sure to remember them when you get some success, no one get's their alone.
